Welcome to Bill Gillon's World

Born in Leith in August 1942, Bill studied at Edinburgh College of Art in the 1960s under Richard Demarco before becoming the president of the Society of Scottish Artists. This unashamed rebel artist spent his life exploring diverse themes that challenge the establishment status quo in his oil and canvas narrated stories about what it means to be human. Bill continually developed his remarkable classical artistic skills to master the craft he gave his life to. One of the last challenges he strove to overcome was the capture of realistic-looking skin, which can be seen in some of his later large-scale portraits. Bill created an expansive and powerful collection that is as fresh today as the day it was crafted, and comfortably stands alongside the work of classical masters such as Holbein and Hesig.
