Bill Gillon (1942–2021) | Edinburgh Figurative Painter & Scottish Realist Artist
Welcome to this archive dedicated to the paintings, drawings, and artistic life of the Scottish artist Bill Gillon. Created to preserve and share his work, the site also includes selected works from the collection that may be available for acquisition upon enquiry.
Working from his studio at Bernard Terrace in Edinburgh, Bill produced an extensive collection of paintings and drawings closely connected to the spaces, objects, people, and ideas that surrounded him. His studio became an important part of his creative process, filled with reference photographs, mirrors, books, props, and unfinished works.
Over five decades, Bill developed a distinctive body of work characterised by psychological intensity, carefully constructed interiors, and theatrical composition. He investigated the relationship between observation, memory, illusion, and performance. His paintings often moved between realism and invention, combining technical control with an unsettling emotional atmosphere.
Created by Bill’s family, the archive will continue to grow over time, with expanded sections on chronology, exhibition history, studio materials, essays, and archival documents that give fuller context to his life and work.
